What is the Yorkshire Peaks Challenge?

This challenge starts and finishes at Horton-In-Ribblesdale, Yorkshire. Walkers will first head for Pen-Y-Ghent (691 metres) utilising parts of the Pennine Way, then head over to Ribblehead via the local Mosses which cover the low Dales. Continue alongside the Settle to Carlise railway, before starting the climb to the summit of Whernside (728 metres). Drop down to Chapel-le-Dale, before the final climb of the day up to Ingleborough (723 metres). Now the long walk back to the finish at Horton.

How long is the Challenge?

Most walkers aim to finish this 24 mile challenge within 12 hours. The challenge involves some 5,000 feet of ascent and descent, and good basic navigation may be required in poor visibility when crossing the mosses and on the summit areas.

How hard is the Challenge?

This is rated as the easiest of our challenges, but you still need to have a good basic level of fitness and stamina, as this is nearly the same distance as a marathon. You will be walking on some very muddy and uneven ground and should have some basic walking experience, and as ever - should be well prepared for a rapid change in weather conditions.

Who takes part in this Challenge?

This is a great event for individuals, pairs, or small groups. It makes excellent training for our other challenges, and is a good introduction to challenge events. It is also very popular with fundraising and charity teams, and with local accommodation available before and after the walk - makes a very enjoyable weekend for all participants.
