Youth Cancer Trust

Congratulations to all the teams who took part in the 3 Peaks Challenge 2008

TOTAL RAISED SO FAR = £39,000 !!!!!!

I sincerely hope that all teams arrived home safely.  I would like to say THANK YOU to all challengers for adhering to the safety advice from Ritchie.  When you read his review (link below) you will be glad I am sure!!!   Several other teams were allowed by their organisers to attempt the summits of Scafel Pike and Snowdon with pretty calamatious results. I realise the weather caused a huge disappointment for everybody involved and again thank you all for your patience and understanding.  YCT will be posting a report on our website explaining the appalling weather conditions that all of you had to suffer.

Thank you for being fantastic!

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS

WYVERN WANDERERS TACKLE  THREE PEAKS

With sponsorship from family, friends and colleagues, a team of eight Wyvern Cargo employees in a minibus recently set off on behalf of the Youth Cancer Trust to conquer Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon in twenty-four hours.

In Scotland they trudged through a snowfield, braving sub-zero temperatures plus severe wind chill to reach the top of Ben Nevis at 14.10 on Saturday and fly the Wyvern flag.

Driving through the night, they reached Scafell in Cumbria just before 4 am.  Heavy rain was pouring off the mountain, turning gentle streams into torrents and for safety reasons  the organisers of the event called climbers to a halt at the half-way mark.   “It was exasperating”  said team leader Andy Hibbs  “but on that day the Mountain Rescue Service brought down 30 reckless climbers who ignored such advice.”

Onwards to Snowdon.  They snatched a fitful rest in the minibus and on arriving at Llanberis they got another weather warning:  With gale force winds  reaching  90 mph at the summit, the organisers were again halting the climb at the half-way point.  By now relatively minor aches and sprains had reduced the able-bodied climbers to five and the  intrepid  survivors reached this final control point at 13.45 on Sunday.

“The Three Peaks Challenge is not for the faint-hearted at the best of times and we  were caught-out by this summer’s somewhat bracing weather” mused Andy.  “But thanks to our  generous sponsors, including the loan of a minibus from U-Drive and the dedication of our two volunteer drivers, we raised more than £2,500 for the Youth Cancer Trust. and the Wyvern Cargo flag has flown atop Ben Nevis so we’re feeling on top of the world!”
