Three Peaks Challenge 2008 - Are you ready for the challenge?

Climb Britain's 3 highest peaks for YCT

Raise money for young cancer patients to enjoy the Youth Cancer Trust experience

Youth Cancer Trust in Dorset is looking for willing teams to participate in the great Three Peaks Challenge in 2008. The three peaks challenge offer teams some of the toughest walking in the UK. For many, completing the three peaks challenge can be harder than other fundraising events, but ultimately more rewarding. The YCT help many youngsters each year but this can only be achieved by fundraising support from teams who participate in challenges like this.

THE CHALLENGE

If you are thinking of doing the three Peaks - DON'T ! Think that is - just GO FOR IT !

When it was first suggested I must admit I did hesitate, after all I didn't even walk to the shops ! But I said yes and committed to it (many times after I thought I should be). But hey I like a challenge & oh boy what a challenge & what a great cause. So off I trotted to Oswald Bailey where a very nice man who was a seasoned walker helped me get the right boots, probably THE most important piece of kit. Lets face it if your boots aren't right you may as well not even start.

THE TRAINING

And thus started 'The Training' - Sunday = walks over The Purbecks or Chessell Beach or Shell Bay. Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday = treadmill on an incline, weights, rowing machine & step ups. Thursday rest, Friday = gym, Saturday = rest. I have to admit that many times at the end of a long day at work when it was cold and dark the last thing I felt like was a trip to the gym and then I would remind myself I had 3 Peaks to climb only months away. Terrific incentive.

THE TEAM

The Team were seasoned climbers, Sam lived in Derbyshire as a child and family fun at weekends was hill walking, Sandra & Roy got engaged at base camp on Everest ! & then there was me ! I was by far the weakest link in my team, over 40, unfit and the highest peak I ever climbed was a sand dune !! Though I do take the stairs when shopping. So it's not hard to see why no one I knew who was doing the three peaks challenge wanted me on their team so I had no choice - I formed my own. My wonderful husband, Marc Young (probably the only one who thought I could do it, ain't love blind ) became our sponsor and MY TEAM was born. Not forgetting our two trusty drivers Anne & Colin who were terrific at getting us from one Peak to the next, without a cross word between them.

THE PEAKS

No amount of hours in the gym or walks on the beach / Purbecks really prepared me for the true reality of the climb.

Peak 1 =Snowdon There were times when I felt like a toddler lifting one chubby leg after the other up a flight of stairs for the very first time. (Shame the legs are still the same ) But the view WOW it was worth it and I made it up and down without incident.

Scarfeld - Not my favourite, very rugged especially near the top, with lots and lots of sheep ! But I figured if they could make it up there so then could I. Take your insect repellent the midges really come out in force at dusk.

Ben Nevis - 4.15am, drizzly & cold -BLISS. This way we would stay cool and comfortable. Two down one to go and by far the hardest. Twice the distance, 19 hours into the challenge with little sleep & too pumped up on adrenaline to eat what I should have. But this was it, only 5 hours to complete if we were going to do it in the 24. Amazingly I did it, not so amazing for the rest of MY Team but definitely for me. And with 10 minutes to spare !!

I won't pretend it was easy but the sense of achievement, camaraderie, memories and friendships formed will stay with me forever.
